POLYMORPH SCREENING

Avantium has a dedicated team for solid-state chemistry technology and services. We offer high-throughput polymorphism studies to pharmaceutical companies for novel APIs and for licensed products. We have developed a proprietary high-throughput approach for the rapid discovery of drug polymorphs that allow customers better protection of their core intellectual property.

We can conduct over 1,000 crystallization experiments using less than 5g of API and analyze all samples with our patented XRPD technology. This means we can deliver high-quality powder diffraction patterns for each sample in a very short time.

Intelligent planning and advanced robotics yield an impressive throughput of at least 200 crystallizations per day. Polymorph screens, together with detailed finalized data analysis (in an electronic format), are completed within four to six weeks of receipt of the API. The benefit of this approach is an improved patent protection of your API, better data to support manufacturing and formulation and better data to support your regulatory filing.

SALT SELECTION STUDIES

Avantium provides high-throughput salt screening and ranking studies to pharmaceutical companies in an early stage of drug development. Our advanced electronic reports of the screening studies will enable you to make a well-informed decision for selecting the optimal salt form for clinical development. For late stage compounds our extensive salt and polymorph screening service is typically used for intellectual property protection.

Avantium screens drug compounds under a broad range of conditions on well plates in a highly controlled environment. We analyze all samples by high-throughput X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD). XRPD is regarded by regulatory agencies as the gold standard for solid form characterization and X-ray powder patterns are often referred to as fingerprints of solid materials. After classification we use a wide range of analytical techniques to characterize the solid forms. Avantium is also capable of scaling-up forms to milligram and gram scale for further characterization.

PEGYLATION

Avantium employs state-of-the-art technology to provide new and economic solutions for the coupling process of PEG (polyethylene glycol) to proteins, peptides or small molecules. The objective of process development studies ranges from improving the yield of a process, to the reduction of cycle time or the suppression of by-products, or even the improvement of the robustness of a production process.

Our unique high-throughput approach, coupled with modeling and simulation tools, ensures faster scale-up and commercial implementation. PEGylation of proteins commonly gives sub-optimal yields; losses of 20% to 40% of precious protein and PEG-agent are not unusual.
