Micron Technologies, a global leader in contract particle size reduction for the pharmaceutical industry, is celebrating the opening of a brand new headquarters and manufacturing facility in Malvern, PA, US).

This 90,000ft² facility designed to be state-of-the-art in terms of cGMP manufacturing is more than double the size of the current facility in Exton, PA. It contains nine processing bays with the ability to double its capacity for continued growth in the future.

The new facility provides modern, efficient processing areas, increased warehouse space, expanded analytical laboratory testing facilities, and specially designed safety and containment technology for the safe processing of highly potent compounds. In addition to the current R&D scale containment unit, additional containment technology will be added for production-scale micronization of highly active ingredients. The increased laboratory space, at 6,000ft², features a vast array of equipment providing the capability for solid-state characterization, traditional analytical chemistry and release testing, as well as stability studies.

The FDA already inspected the facility in February 2010 with a successful outcome; processing is expected to start in April 2010.

Joseph Drost, president of Micron Technologies, said: "Particle size reduction continues to be the technology of choice for products requiring solubility enhancement as well as many applications including inhalation products that require fine particle size to achieve their performance potential. It is Micron's responsibility as a global leader in this field to be at the forefront of these technologies. Our investment in this state-of-the-art facility demonstrates our long-term commitment to the pharmaceutical industry in addition to providing the technologies and services our customers require. We are thrilled by the prospects this new facility will offer."
