GOETTINGEN, March 23, 2006 - Sartorius introduces a new format for the purification of therapeutic proteins. The flow pattern in Sartobind Direct Membrane Adsorbers is routed - not at the usual right angles to and through the membrane - but tangential over the membrane. Thus proteins from difficult filterable or even unfilterable solutions can be bound. The Direct capsule format allows for particles in the feed and operation nearly free of back pressure due to its open construction. Fast circulation through the unit allows quantitative capturing of proteins from solutions within a few minutes.
All types of ion exchange and affinity membranes can be integrated into the new format. The direct capture of proteins succeeded with mono-clonal antibodies from cell culture both on a Protein A membrane. Proteins from unfiltered yeast suspensions, from milk and even from albumen could be captured on Q or S ion exchanger or a metal chelate membrane respectively. Actually viruses such as influenza could be purified.
