Sieving is a widely used and inexpensive method of particle size analysis, but increasingly stringent QC specifications demand the use of precise calibration procedures.
Whitehouse Scientific has developed a new approach to sieve calibration using precision microspheres produced to narrow sizes and packaged as single shot standards. A range is available for calibrating sieves from 20 microns to over 3mm. The mean aperture size is calculated from the percentage of the standard passing the sieve. Calibration is fast, repeatable and independent of the method of sieve shaking.
Production is stringently controlled. Microspheres are shape sorted to maximise sphericity; sized using electroformed sieves traceable to International standards; and examined by microscopy to confirm sphericity and ensure a single peak in the size distribution.
It is now possible to calibrate sieves quickly and simply in your own laboratory without having to return them to the manufacturer.
