For the direct neutralisation of excess gastric acidity, DSP-Scora compounds serve as active ingredients in antacid formulations. In direct neutralisation, dosage units (tablets, powders, suspensions, etc.) are ingested by the patient with the aim of restoring a more neutral pH to the stomach.
Patients often suffer from excess acid due to taking acid-inducing prophylactics during treatment. Antacid medicaments based on DSP-Scora products serve to protect the gastric system from the impact of induced gastric acidity.
Antacid formulations take many forms including tablets, powders and liquid mixtures. DSP-Scora antacid actives enable the pharmaceutical formulator to choose the most appropriate form of neutralizer for each particular preparation.
Magnesium oxide, hydroxide and carbonate, as well as Scoralite, all offer neutralisation capacity, but each possesses specific advantages. Magnesium oxide provides the most neutralizing power per unit weight of product. Magnesium hydroxide neutralisation is likely to be slower and gentler than oxide neutralisation, while magnesium carbonate and Scoralite offer the possibility of effervescence during the neutralisation reaction.
DSP-Scora offer several grades of antacid magnesium compounds, differing in density, surface area, particle sizing and chemical reactivity, and thus offering the pharmaceutical manufacturer a wide choice for formulating the final medicament.
A dense magnesium oxide or hydroxide powder will yield a small, high dosage tablet, while lighter, fluffier powders would tend to yield larger tablets. Light powders are suitable for suspensions, both for medications prepared in bulk and for sachet-type single dosage units.
DSP's DC-grade magnesium oxide and Scoralite are suitable for tablet manufacture by direct compaction techniques. DSP-Scora provides technical support in the choice of the most appropriate grade for a given formulation.
All DSP-Scora's magnesium products can be used in laxative preparations, using the same formulation techniques as for antacids.
Scoralite is a highly refined synthetic calcium carbonate having unique cubic crystal structure and purity in excess of 99.8%, high density (above 1g/cc), high flowability and low surface area. The superior taste and mouth feel of Scoralite are totally different from the chalky taste and feel that typifies Ground and Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (GCC and PCC).
Scoralite is the premier source of calcium for osteoporosis treatment. It is frequently compounded with vitamin D and can be tabletted by direct compaction techniques.
All DSP-Scora magnesium and calcium products meet the stringent purity requirements of the USP, BP and EP. All DSP-Scora magnesia products are characterized by extremely low levels of all metals and specifically by low levels of lead, being easily in conformance with Proposition 65 for lead.
