Applikon Biotechnology - Bioreactor SystemsApplikon Biotechnology is a privately owned Dutch company whose purpose is to develop, manufacture and supply on–line process analyzers and bioreactor systems for both research and production use. Founded in 1973, Applikon has grown from a small sized company supplying laboratory instrumentation to a dynamic worldwide enterprise capable of supplying a broad and diverse line of bioreactor systems. Applikon systems offer the optimal tool, both in R&D and process development as well as in pilot plants, for growing micro-organisms or cells under controlled conditions. Over the years Applikon has developed close cooperative relationships with a variety of academic institutes in order to have access to relevant know–how and bioprocess development. Qualified manufacturing partners ensure that only products made to the highest standards will be delivered to our customers. DESIGN, ENGINEERING AND MANUFACTURE OF BIOREACTORSApplikon Biotechnology specialises in the design, engineering and manufacturing of bioreactors, control systems and software. Designs are according the latest standards for equipment used in the life science industry (cGMP / GAMP). Standard products include micro reactors, single-use reactors, glass (autoclavable) bioreactors and stainless steel (SIP / CIP) bioreactors. All standard bioreactors include complete measurement and control strategies, and SCADA. Innovative sensors and the unique cell retention (perfusion) device BioSep, complete the portfolio. EXPERTISE IN BIO-PROCESS ENGINEERINGStrong application support, engineering capabilities, technical support and service are standard in the Applikon group. Proficiency in microbial and mammalian cell cultures, combined with expertise in bio-process engineering and strong links to universities and research institutes, enables Applikon to offer safety, security and quality to the biotech industry. APPLIKON'S µ-24 BIOREACTOR Applikon's µ-24 bioreactor is a recent development in its product portfolio. Optimization studies and screening and testing of strains and cell lines are of high importance in both industry and R&D institutes. Large numbers of tests are required and they must be performed in as short a time as possible. Tests should be performed so that results can be used for further process development (to the production). The µ-24 bioreactor is a platform for fermentation in a very small volume. It operates with parameters that are relevant in the biotechnology industry. This bioreactor is based on a micro-titerplate (24 wells). Each well (reactor) has a working volume of 2ml to 6ml and each reactor has its own pH, DO, and temperature measurement and control capabilities. The agitation (orbital shaking) can be controlled in the range 0rpm to 800rpm. This bioreactor is completely automated and all data (per reactor) is made visible on the screen of a PC and stored. Data can be transferred to standard protocols. In studies, a good correlation between the µ-24 and small-scale bioreactors was observed whereas the shake flask did not correlate. The µ-24 bioreactor is therefore a perfect tool for scale - up and down predictions, strain evaluation and media development.
