Catalysis is a very potent and versatile tool for chemical synthesis and is gaining more and more importance. Heterogeneous or homogeneous catalysts may be used, and in most cases they contain transition metals, very often precious metals. However, chemical reactions utilising either heterogeneous or homogeneous catalysts can result in soluble metal contamination. These soluble metals can be detrimental to product quality and product yield. In the case of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) development, the metal catalyst must be removed to a regulated level.
