Analysing Copolymers Using GPC/SEC

Malvern Instruments

Malvern discusses how to analyse synthetic polymers using gel permeation chromotography (GPC) / size exclusion chromatography (SEC).

Copolymers exhibit a variety of monomer patterns and structures and relative concentrations. For example, in styrene-butadiene rubber, which is softer and more elastic.

Mixing two different polymers where the individual polymer chains are not covalently bonded is an alternative method, which is sometimes more accessible. Knowing the relative concentration of each monomer in a copolymer is critical to understanding the physical properties of the end product.
