Definition of Common Terms Used in Dynamic Light ScatteringMalvern Instruments
The following list gives a definition of a number of terms, with notes on their specific use in the context of dynamic light scattering.
The Z-average size (or Z-average mean) is used in dynamic light scattering as a parameter also known as the cumulants mean. It is a primary and most stable parameter produced by the tecnique. The Z-average mean is the best value to report when used in a quality control setting as it is defined in ISO 13321 and more recently ISO 22412, which defined this mean as the 'harmonic intensity averaged particle diameter'.
