Fibromyalgia Drug Rejected Amid Date-Rape Fears

23 August 2010

A US advisory panel has rejected a Jazz Pharmaceutical medication for fibromyalgia due to concerns that it could be used as a date-rape drug.

The drug contains a form of gamma hydroxybutyrate, commonly known as GHB, a chemical infamously linked with legal highs and date-rape drugs, prompting the US Food and Drug Administration advisory committee to vote 20-2 against approval.

Jazz shares fell from $10.23 to $7.35 during after-hours trading following the verdict.

However, the panellists urged Jazz to continue with the medication, and said there was strong need for genuine treatment options for the often misunderstood pain-causing disorder.
