All NHS trusts in England are offering research to patients, according to a league table published by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network (CRN).

The 2015 / 2016 NIHR research activity league table indicates all NHS trusts in England are delivering clinical research, thereby offering thousands more patients with access to better treatments and care.

The league table offers a picture of how much clinical research is happening, where, in what types of trusts, and involving how many patients.

Commercial research activity is an added feature for the 2015 / 2016 league table, and 36% of studies were new commercial contract studies in 2015.

"This year's league table results highlight for the first time the growing importance of commercial research for the NHS in England."

Collaboration with industry is essential to enable the NHS to deliver first class clinical research, accelerating the development and availability of new treatments, therapies and diagnostics.

Evidence indicates research active trusts have better patient outcomes. The league table confirms every NHS trust in England is now research active, and more than 60% increased their research activity last year.

NHS organisations of all types and sizes are carrying out research, offering more and more patients the chance to take part in innovative research studies.

NIHR CRN chief executive officer Dr Jonathan Sheffield said: “This year's league table results highlight for the first time the growing importance of commercial research for the NHS in England. The life science industry is vital to enable the NHS to continue to deliver first class clinical research.

"Commercial involvement in clinical research speeds up the development and availability of new treatments, therapies and diagnostics for NHS patients. The UK is a destination of choice with 35,000 participants recruited to studies sponsored by the life sciences industry in England last year.

"Our data shows there is a growing commitment to research from both the NHS and patients. Special congratulations go to Newcastle NHS Foundation Trust for ensuring that research is consistently embedded as part of everyday patient care, and also to Barts Health NHS Trust and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust for the largest increase in research studies over the past year.”

In addition to figuring at the top of the league table for the amount of commercial studies delivered (114 studies), Barts Health NHS Trust have the biggest increase in studies from 2015 (279 to 335) joint with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (365 to 421), which both saw a 56 study increase.

Commenting on the league table results, Minister for Public Health and Innovation Nicola Blackwood said: "It is very encouraging to see continued growth in research activity in our health service.

"The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) is the UK’s largest health research funder and one of the largest in the world. Our ambition is to build on the country's unique relationship between patients, the NHS, researchers and the life sciences industry to develop new treatments for patients.

"The NIHR research activity league table recognises those NHS trusts that have worked incredibly hard to support this vision and bring new research opportunities to their patients."
