Bidachem Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients Plant, Bergamo
The site at Fornovo San Giovanni was expanded with a new API manufacturing plant, completed in May 2009.	The plant is located in the Lombardy region of Italy and is centrally placed in Europe to supply other Boehringer Ingelheim affiliates with APIs.	Bromination is one of the facility's areas of expertise.
The Bidachem plant produces a range of generic APIs including such compounds as ketoprofen and ibuprofen.	The plant can offer a range of services to third parties including laboratory trials and process development.	The new plant, Sintesi II, will be mainly focused on the production of new molecule dabigatran etexilate.
Bidachem's services specifically include custom manufacturing and license production of APIs.

Biogen Idec Pharmaceutical Production Facility,
Psoriasis drug Amevive (alefacept) may be produced at the Hillerød facility.	Avonex (Interferon beta-1a), Biogen Idec's best-selling treatment for MS, will be the first drug produced at the Danish plant.	The plant is in an area known as 'Medicon Valley' because of its attractiveness to pharmaceutical companies.
Biogen Idec has already secured an option to buy an adjacent 36-acre site for the second phase of construction at Hillerød.	A section of the process equipment from the new large scale manufacturing plant.	Construction of one of the main production buildings underway.

Boehringer Ingelheim Biopharmaceutical Production
Boehringer Ingelheim's Vienna facility is for the manufacture of therapeutically active proteins, plasmid DNA (pDNA) and single chain antibodies.	The company is capable of producing pDNA on a large scale, and at current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) compliant levels.	Boehringer Ingelheim developed the CIM Technology in conjunction with BIA Separations and will now offer the technology as a Contract Manufacturing Organisation (CMO) service to customers worldwide.
The expansion of the Vienna facility has required a total investment of more than €80 million. It is the company’s largest single investment at its Austrian subsidiary.	CIM tube monolithic columns are large-scale forms of CIM supports intended for laboratory, semi-industrial, and industrial scale purification and bioconversion.

Boehringer Ingelheim Biotechnology Process Plant,
The investment in the high-tech Biberach site was a move to strengthen the company's position in the biotech sector.	The expansion included a new production plant with an additional six fermenters of the same capacity as those already in place.	The products, recombinant proteins manufactured using cell cultures, are used to manufacture biopharmaceutical medicines to treat heart attacks, strokes and rheumatism, among other ailments.

Brecon Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing Expansion,
Brecon Pharmaceuticals' packaging and manufacturing facilities are located near Hay-on-Wye in Hereford.	Conventional blister packs are just one product that can be produced at the Brecon Pharmaceuticals site.	Brecon's Noack 623 blister pack line includes child-resistant senior-friendly technology.
A variety of pills and capsules will be packaged at the Brecon Pharmaceuticals facility.	Generic tablets form a large part of the bottling business at Brecon.	The Noack 623 blister pack line is already installed and in full production at Brecon Pharmaceuticals.

Cordis Corporation,
Cordis Corporation has opened a manufacturing and development site in Cashel, Ireland that will serve all markets outside the US.	Drug-eluting stents contain drugs that prevent cell proliferation, allowing their long-term use for angioplasty procedures.	The new Cordis facility will also host the development of the next generation of stent-type devices.

Elan Pharma Secondary Pharmaceutical Facility
Elan Pharma is constructing a new sterile fill and finish pharmaceutical facility at its Athlone site in the Republic of Ireland.	The new secondary pharmaceutical facility will be used for the production of oral solid dosage forms and also for the filling of vials.	The secondary pharmaceutical facility is a steel-framed, cladded, three-floor building, with an adjoining single-storey warehouse.
The cleanroom design includes several full-height glass walls on a circulation corridor around the processing floor and two 'inspection' corridors with full-length glass walls.	One of the new drugs to be filled and finished at the new facility will be the capsule form of Duloxetine Hydrochloride (Cymbalta, Xeristar).	The molecular structure of Duloxetine which is manufactured by Elan.

Eli Lilly Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Facility, Kinsale
Zyprexa (Olanzapine) is a treatment for schizophrenia from Eli Lilly produced at Kinsale.	The precursor to Evista is also produced at Kinsale.	Kinsale is in the biotech county, County Cork.
The new biotech facility will eventually produce a drug to treat Alzheimer's disease.	The Eli Lilly biotech production facility will also be accompanied by several laboratories for development and scale-up work.

Ferring Pharmaceuticals

Ferring Pharmaceuticals Freeze Drying
Ferring Pharmaceuticals has built a new pharmaceutical freeze drying and filling production facility near Kiel, Germany.	The glass facade panels of the building's upper floor are specially designed with wing-like aluminium lamellae for sun and wind protection.	The new freeze drying and filling facility will fill and freeze dry pharmaceutical products in accordance with the latest cGMP and US FDA regulations.
The new plant will freeze-dry and fill some of Ferring's most successful products, including Bravelle, a highly purified preparation of human follicle stimulating hormone (FSH).

Gedeon Richter Biopharmaceutical Plant
The new Gedeon Richter biotech facility is being constructed in Debrecen, Hungary.	The Hungarian Government is providing subsidies in return for the 110 jobs being provided by the new plant.	The Debrecen area was chosen for its services and access.
The Hungarian facility will be flexible and able to use a number of different technologies.	One of the technologies at the Gedeon Richter plant will use recombinant organisms to produce medicinal peptides.

Genzyme Biomanufacturing Plant
Thymoglobulin is used in transplantation but its uses are set to be extended.	One of the indications for the drug is in the treatment of aplastic anaemia.	Thymoglobulin has a protective effect against white blood cells in preventing rejection of the transplanted tissue in renal transplantation.
Thymoglobulin can help prevent acute rejection – one of the biggest problems in renal transplant.	Thymoglobulin is administered by IV infusion.

GlaxoSmithKline GSK Vaccine Manufacturing Plant, Dresden
GSK expanded its plant in Dresden by 2008, to keep up with growing international demand.	The GSK Biologicals site in Dresden produces seasonal influenza vaccine Fluarix.	Production of Fluarix has been expanded from 2005's 35 million syringes to a capacity of 70 million.

GlaxoSmithKline Vaccine Manufacturing Plant, St-Amand-Les-Eaux
GSK CEO Andrew Witty. The company is increasing its vaccines production with the building of a new facility in France.	GSK's cervical cancer vaccine Cervarix will be the main product manufactured at the St Amand Les Eaux site.	The facility will formulate, freeze-dry and package doses of adult and paediatric vaccines.

Grindeks Final Dosage Forms Facility, Riga

Hameln Pharma Sterile Facility
Hameln pharma's new sterile production facility was completed in April 2008.	The facility based in Hameln, Germany, process around 300 products at bulk level.	The layout of the hameln pharma facility has been optimised for lean manufacturing processes.
The plant can be operated with 33% less staff than hameln's previous sterile facility.	The U-shaped hameln facility provides efficiency and enables a safe, clean workplace.	The plant can produce 5,000l of highly purified water within one hour, thereby producing steam for sterilisation.

Haupt Pharma, New Packaging Line,
Haupt Pharma is one of the leading pharmaceutical contract manufacturers in the world.	Haupt Pharma has recently installed a new blister packaging machine from Uhlmann at its Brackenheim site in Germany.	Uhlmann's B1660 blister packaging machine in conjunction with the new C2504 cartoner makes one of the most efficient systems possible.
The Haupt Pharma Brackenheim site packages 200 million blisters per year. Capacity will now be increased thanks to the newly installed system.

Hermes Pharma Production Plant,
Hermes Pharma is investing at its Wolfsberg and Wolfratzshausen sites in Austria.	LSMW Group carried out the pre-studies for the new plant and also filled the role of main contractor.	The main efforts of the new Wolfsberg expansion will be focused on contract manufacturing of effervescent tablets.
Hermes Pharma is owned by Germany-based Hermes Arzneimittel GmbH, originally a supplier of herbs.	The Wolfsberg factory will increase its output by 50% after the expansion project is completed.

Hoffman La Roche Biotechnology Plant Expansion, Penzberg, Upper Bavaria

IDT Biologika
A new facility for the production of live human viral vaccines was opened by IDT Biologika in May 2007.	The IDT Biologika site has the capacity for the production of many different vaccines.	The majority of operations at the IDT Biologika facility are contained inside cleanrooms.
The IDT Biologika facility will use downstream technology to develop vaccines against infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, AIDS and rotavirus.	The facility's cleanrooms can culture viruses at a wide range of temperatures.	The process engineer for the IDT Biologica facility was BIDECO GmbH.

Kondirolli Pharmaceutical Facility, Pristina
Nexhet Kondirolli, with the help of European, USAID and venture capital funding, has been constructing a new pharmaceutical facility to supply much needed medicines to Kosovo.	Generic pills and capsules will be manufactured at the new facility. The plant will have four production lines and two shifts, with 75 employees and an annual output of 5 million units.	The 32,000ft² plant was structurally complete by the end of 2005 and will undergo stringent commissioning and qualification process which will lead to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and European Quality standards being achieved.
Cough syrups will be produced and bottled at the new facility.	Generic pharmaceuticals such as Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) will also play a big role in the product range.

Medis International Drug Packaging Plant,
Located in Bolatice, Czech Republic, the plant will produce primary and secondary packaging for drugs in solid and liquid oral dosage forms.	The Medis facility uses the company's SOTAX lab equipment in the physiochemical laboratory.	The fully air-conditioned warehouse has capacity for up to 1,250 pallet places
The Medis plant is designed in accordance with the latest GMP requirements for pharmaceutical manufacturing.	The entire line can pack up to 220 million tablets or capsules a year.

Merck And Co Vaccine Facility, Carlow
Carlow Town is near Waterford in Ireland.	Merck is now expanding its vaccine production capabilities.	The new Merck plant will be able to produce vaccines from live or attenuated viruses.

The facility manufactures liquid-filled hard capsules, alongside the development of solid and oral liquid dosage forms.

Pfizer Biotech Manufacturing Facility, Shanballey
Pfizer is to increase the number of biologics in its pipeline and is constructing manufacturing capacity.	CTLA-4 (Cytotoxic T-Lymphocyte Antigen 4) targets T cells; an antibody to inhibit it is one of Pfizer's cancer therapies.	Pfizer has been in the Cork area since 1969 and has a number of plants, employing a total of 2,200 personnel in Ireland.
Torcetrapib is the anti cholesterol drug that Pfizer took out of Phase III clinical trials in December 2006.

Pfizer European R&D Headquarters, Sandwich, Kent
Pfizer's Sandwich site is the centre of its European research and development operations.	The laboratory at Sandwich employs 2,700 scientists and develops medication for pain, allergies and infectious diseases.	Pfizer's Kent site also develops Celsentri, the first oral class drug to treat HIV.

Strangnas is in Sweden situated near Stockholm.	The growth hormone molecule (polypeptide).	The pituitary is a complex area of the brain and a lack of growth hormone production can lead to several serious conditions.

The new Pfizer facility is situated in Illertissen in the south of Germany.	The active ingredient of Chantix, varenicline, is produced in Pfizer's Little Island plant in Ireland.	Vareniciline acts on the nicotinic receptors.
Nicotine is the addictive drug in tobacco, which causes smokers to continue the habit.	Pfizer's Chantix has been shown to be highly effective in patients wishing to give up tobacco smoking.

Polpharma Dry Forms II Production Facility,
Polpharma's Dry Forms II plant is a secondary manufacturing facility for the production of tablets, capsules and effervescent tablets.	The new pharmaceutical production facility in Starogard Gdanski, Poland.	The structure of one of Polpharma's drugs released in 2006, the antidepressant Sertralina.

Pronova Biopharma Pharmaceutical Production Facility
Pronova's new Kalundborg facility will be producing commercial volumes in 2010.	The demand for Omacor/Lovaza has meant that the new Kalundborg plant will need to produce as much high-quality material as possible.	Omacor/Lovaza is packaged in gelatine capsules.
Sales of Omacor were nearly $800bn in 2008 and may top $1bn in 2009/2010.	The new Kalundborg plant uses the same technology as the company's existing Sandefjord plant.	Omacor/Lovaza has been approved for the treatment of elevated levels of triglycerides hypertriglyceridemia.

Rentschler Biotechnologie, New Manufacturing Capacity, Laupheim
Rentschler's expansion project to increase its production capacity has been ongoing since 2006.	The investment in Rentschler's biotech facility was €70m up to 2002.	Rentschler provides intermediate reactor volume for commercial production and clinical trials.
The reactors installed in the Laupheim facility can be used with batch, fed-batch, or perfusion processes.	Rentschler Biotechnologie was the first company to get approval for an interferon drug.

Rhodia Pharma Solutions Manufacturing Facility,
Rhodia Pharma Solutions' Annan facility has four independent pharmaceutical manufacturing and development buildings.	The facilities are being upgraded to provide new capacity for manufacturing scale, pilot scale and scale-up development for contract manufacturing.	Rhodia Pharma Solutions carries out contracts for major pharmaceutical companies and also for smaller 'start-up' companies.
The Annan facility is cGMP validated and specialises in the production of bulk active pharmaceutical ingredients (API).	One of the new products being produced at Annan is WS-23, a flavour and fragrance building block specifically used in pharmaceutical products as a taste enhancer.	The plant also produces a range of APIs for use in the manufacture of a new drug to treat bone cancers.

Richter Gedeon Hormone Production Facility,
The new Richter facility was designed primarily to produce finished contraceptives and active bulk ingredients for export.	Richter has a wide portfolio of contraceptive products, which includes finished products as well as second- and third-generation tablets.	Validation of production to a level that would result in FDA accreditation was a major concern during the realisation of the turnkey project.

Roche Biotechnology Plant, Basel
The new Roche office building from across the river in Basel will hold 2,400 employees.	The new biotech building blends into the Basel architecture.	The new biotech building from a different aspect.
The new biotech building makes use of all the natural light it can to be environmentally friendly.	Avastin will be produced by Roche in Basel for the European market.

Rohner Custom Synthesis Plant,
Rohner AG has unsurpassed expertise in the production of fine chemicals.	The Rohner Custom Synthesis Plant is situated in Pratteln near Basel, Switzerland.	Hydrogenation is one of the basic reaction types offered in custom synthesis at the Pratteln plant.
Grignard reactions are a basic organometallic reaction type undertaken at the Rohner plant.	The Rohner Custom Synthesis Plant changed hands for the third time in 2006.

SAFC Pharma API Manufacturing Expansion,
SAFC has made a $4.7m investment into the Arklow API facility.	Arklow is the company's global centre for the production of commercial and late-stage APIs and advanced intermediates.	The new reactor will increase production by some 15%.
The Arklow API site won an award in 2006 for taking the lead in reducing solvent use and recycling.

Sanofi Pasteur Vaccine Plant
The new manufacturing facility is in Val de Reuil, in the North West of France near Rouen.	Sanofi Pasteur is involved with FLUPAN which aims to increase the readiness of the EU to an influenza pandemic.	The Sanofi plant will produce 200 filled vials and syringes per year.
Part of the surface of an H5N1 virus; Sanofi Pasteur is supplying a vaccine against this to a number of EU countries.	Sanofi's new facility will be able to make vaccines for 20 different diseases.

Takeda Bulk API Plant,
Peptic ulcer drug Lansodin (lansoprazole) is just one of the drugs produced by Takeda at its Dublin plant.	Takeda's API plant was build on a 20-acre site at Grange Castle International Business Park.	Type II diabetes drug pioglitazone hydrochloride has its active ingredients produced at the Dublin plant.
Takeda's Irish operations also produce hypertensive drug candesartan.	Takeda's API plant in Clondalkin was fully fitted out and validated by mid-2005.	Approximately 60 staff were required for the API plant.
