The Middle East has seen the largest growth in respiratory-related trials over the past decade

We've analysed 10 years' worth of clinical trials data from GlobalData to pick out key geographic trends.

The Middle East has seen a 229% increase in the number of respiratory trials taking place over the past decade, the largest increase for any region worldwide.

The region now ranks in fourth for the total number of trials taking place, compared to its sixth-placed ranking in 2010.

These figures come from GlobalData’s extensive clinical trials database which seeks to track the number of clinical trials taking place in countries around the world, in numerous therapy areas.

Middle East

The Middle East saw the biggest increase in respiratory related trials.

Between 2010 and 2020, there was a 229% increase in the number of trials taking place.

In 2020, the largest proportion of trials in the region took place in Iran with 70.9% of all trials in the region taking place there.

Israel and Saudi Arabia had the next largest percentage of trials taking place in the region with 17.7% and 3.2%, respectively.

Asia-Pacific

The Asia-Pacific region saw a 135% increase in the number of respiratory trials taking place.

China saw the largest amount of trials taking place, in 2020, at 51.3%.

Trials in India and Australia also made up a large proportion of the trials taking place with 16.3% and 8.2%, respectively.

South and Central America

South and Central America saw a 128% increase in the number trials taking place.

Brazil, Argentina and Chile made up the most trials in the region, with 38.1%, 19.4% and 11.5%, respectively.

Africa

Africa saw a 83% increase in respiratory related trials taking place.

Egypt saw the largest percentage of trials taking place in the region at 47.6%.

South Africa and Gambia also made up a significant proportion of the trials taking place.

North America

Despite being placed fifth, North America still saw an increase in the number of respiratory trials.

The region saw a 42% increase in the number of trials.

The United States made up 74.8% the largest proportion of trials taking place in the region.

Canada and Mexico also made up a large amount of the trials taking place with 16.5% and 8.7%, respectively.

Europe

Europe saw the biggest decrease in respiratory trials.

The number of trials in the region fell by 21% between 2010 and 2020.

Spain saw the largest percentage of trials taking place in the region with 10.7%.
