In recent years, the surge in injectable biosimilars / biologics and growing acceptance of self-administration has increased the demand for innovative combination products such as auto injectors and pen injectors.

This has been matched with the increased availability of drug delivery device solutions that often differ in both features and handling sequence. As a device manufacturer, SHL believes it is essential to provide a suite of tools that enable our biopharmaceutical partners to evaluate these different device solutions for their drug products.

The injection pad is quickly becoming one of these tools as it helps to showcase the operation and feeling of an auto injector or pen injector by performing a real injection. Recognising this as a valuable tool to demonstrate and test products, SHL developed a customised injection pad called the TRIO with the help of an external design firm.

The TRIO pad-like surface has been specifically designed so that there is minimal resistance during injection, ensuring a smooth injection process during demonstrations. It is also a reusable product that is compatible with any injection device with needle extension of up to 25mm. TRIO is equipped with a pouring spout and removable lid so that the contents can be easily emptied after use.

The lid is made of a silicone rubber that provides high durability for multiple needle punctures and the interior of the container has been given a curved finish to make it easier to clean. The triangular shape not only gives it a distinctive look, but allows it to be held comfortably by hand or easily placed on the table utilising a unique non-slip surface. The TRIO comes in four different colours and the sides’ exterior surface has been engineered to provide additional grip during injection.

This TRIO is available as a free tool to biopharmaceutical companies and can be requested directly from SHL or obtained at any of the exhibitions and/or conferences that SHL attends. For customers that request sample devices, complimentary TRIO injection surfaces will also be given.
