The UK now has eight confirmed cases of H1N1 swine flu and the Department of Health has set up a telephone information line for concerned members of the public.

Another 230 cases are under laboratory investigation, according to the Health Protection Agency (HPA).

The National Health Service’s telephone helpline service NHS Direct received more than 1,600 calls on Tuesday from people concerned about the swine flu outbreak. Of these, 249 cases were referred to their GP.

Two of the new cases are from the London area and one is from the North East of England. All have mild symptoms and are responding to treatment at home, the HPA said in a statement.
