By Allie Nawrat

In the daily briefing, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Alok Sharma announced the launch of a UK Covid-19 vaccine taskforce.

Led by Chief Scientific Adviser Sir Patrick Vallance and Deputy Chief Medical Officer Professor Jonathan van Tam, this taskforce will support and coordinate efforts in the UK to research and develop a Covid-19 vaccine, including reviewing regulations to facilitate rapid, but safe, vaccine trials. It will also focus on future procurement and delivery of the vaccines once developed and approved.

Sharma said: “UK scientists are working as fast as they can to find a vaccine that fights coronavirus, saving and protecting people’s lives. We stand firmly behind them in their efforts.

“The Vaccine Taskforce is key to coordinating efforts to rapidly accelerate the development and manufacture of a potential new vaccine, so we can make sure it is widely available to patients as soon as possible.”

The taskforce will be contain representatives from within government, academia and industry, including AstraZeneca, the Wellcome Trust and the BioIndustry Association.
