GlobalData Epidemiologist Report: Australia and China experience surge in Covid infections

By Paul Dennis

2 August

Globally, the total confirmed cases of Covid-19 have reached over 198,392,000, with more than 4,225,000 deaths and over 142,493,000 recoveries reported.

The US, India, and Brazil occupy the first, second, and third positions, respectively for total confirmed Covid-19 cases.

These countries continue to report the highest number of daily new confirmed cases.

There were a high number of new daily deaths in Indonesia (1,800), Brazil (900) and Russia (770) this week.

In the UK, 72.5% of adults have received both doses of a Covid-19 vaccine.

There were over 24,000 daily new confirmed cases and 66 new daily deaths, as the seven-day rolling average of Covid-19 cases continues to fall.

Around 860,000 viral tests are being conducted daily, and almost 700,000 alerts to self-isolate were sent from the NHS app over the last week.

Despite administering over 1.6 billion Covid-19 vaccine doses so far, China is experiencing a surge in Covid-19 infections, including 300 cases of the highly contagious Delta variant identified over the last ten days.

Authorities are ramping up testing and have imposed local travel restrictions in multiple provinces to control the largest outbreak in the country in months.

In Australia, officials have extended a lockdown in Queensland, after more than 250 new confirmed cases have been reported today.

Australia’s vaccine rollout programme has been slow; with less than 42% of over 70s vaccinated with both doses of their Covid-19 vaccine.
