GlobalData Epidemiologist Report: Covid infections soar in Turkey as global tally nears 150 million

By Paul Dennis

29 April

Globally, the total confirmed cases of Covid-19 have reached over 149,683,000, with more than 3,152,000 deaths and over 99,400,000 recoveries.

Although the Covid-19 burden continues to be high, the milestone of 100,000,000 total recovered cases is rapidly approaching.

Uruguay, Cyprus, and Lithuania reported the highest rates of daily new confirmed cases with 977, 845, and 617 cases per million population, respectively.

Of the three countries with highest rates of confirmed cases per million population, Lithuania is the highest in case fatality rate at 1.5%, followed by Uruguay and Lithuania at 1.2% and 0.4% respectively.

Due to soaring Covid-19 infection rates in Turkey, the country prepares for its first full lockdown since the beginning of the pandemic.

Turkey, commended for its early combative efforts against the virus, saw its nation rise among the countries with highest reported cases in Europe from March 2020 to April 2021.

A U-turn on lifting restrictions by the government was likely the cause for a second wave striking the country in March.
