GlobalData Epidemiologist Report: Global Covid infections near 182 million

By Paul Dennis

30 June

Globally, the total confirmed cases of Covid-19 have reached over 181,908,000 cases, with more than 3,940,000 deaths and over 131,833,000 recoveries reported.

The US, India, and Brazil occupy the first, second, and third positions, respectively for total confirmed Covid-19 cases.

Of these leading countries, as of 30 June, Brazil has the highest case fatality rate reported at 2.79%, followed by the US at 1.80% and India at 1.31%.

The global case fatality rate reported is 2.17% as of 30 June.

Brazil has now reported more than 515,000 deaths.

According to a study in Nature Medicine, Covid-19 has reversed a steady rise in life expectancy in Brazil, with an estimated decline of 1.3 years in 2020 and an even greater decline of 1.78 years forecast for 2021.

In the US, a report from the National Center for Health Statistics, a part of the CDC, estimated that life expectancy dropped by 1.13 years in 2020.

WHO officials have urged fully vaccinated people to continue wearing masks and taking other precautions due to the rise of the highly infectious Delta variant.

Continued concern over this variant has triggered further lockdowns in Asian and Pacific countries.

In Bangladesh, soldiers will patrol the streets to enforce stay-at-home orders.

The Malaysian government has announced that the strict lockdown would be extended indefinitely, and Hong Kong officials have barred flights from Britain, where the Delta variant cases continue to climb.

Japan and the US are going to donate 1 million vaccines each to Malaysia this week.

The government of Japan is considering extending coronavirus restrictions that are set to be lifted on 12 July by two to four weeks. This timeframe would overlap with the Olympics, set to start on 23 July.
