GlobalData Epidemiologist Report: Japan eases restrictions as Covid cases trend downwards

By Paul Dennis

30 September

Globally, the total confirmed cases of Covid-19 have reached over 233,340,000, with more than 4,775,000 deaths reported.

In Japan, the cases of Covid-19 seem to be decreasing.

In September, Japan has reported 208,900 cases (with an average of 7,700 daily new cases); this is a significant decrease from the 564,000 cases reported in August (with an average of approximately 18,000 daily new cases).

As cases have begun to trend downwards, Japanese officials have decided to lift the state of emergency after five months of restrictions.

The restrictions will be lifted gradually; initially there will be an 8pm curfew and people will be advised to refrain from non-essential outings and gatherings.

The government will then prepare to institute vaccine passports for larger events and travel.

Currently, approximately 53% of the Japanese population are fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

Vaccine passports may incentivize unvaccinated individuals to get vaccinated, which would assist in further reducing the number of cases.

Malaysia recorded very few Covid-19 cases throughout 2020 and early 2021, due to successful deployment of mitigating measures and lockdown restrictions.

However, since May of this year, Malaysia has recorded a surge in cases.

In September, there have been 18,700 new cases reported daily, with a total of 486,000 cases reported so far this month.

On average, there have been over 300 daily deaths recorded during September.

The daily case fatality rate is low given the number of new cases; however, this could be attributed to 60% of the population being fully vaccinated.

There are currently no new measures being introduced to control the current surge.

Malaysia is set to ease restrictions and re-open borders to vaccinated tourists and Malaysian citizens.

It is unlikely that cases will begin to decrease until the percentage of vaccinated individuals increases, and measures are put in place to mitigate the spread of the virus.
