The American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) has published the first book devoted to the use of intelligent infusion devices.

Written by a fellow of ASHP Pamela Phelps, Smart Infusion Pumps: Implementation, Management and Drug Libraries includes an introduction of the technology, a guide to choosing a pump and techniques for developing dosing limits for medications.

ASHP vice-president of publications and drug information Carol Wolfe said, “Purchasing intelligent infusion devices can be a complicated and costly endeavour. This book is an indispensable reference for hospitals and health systems that are either using intelligent infusion device technology, or are considering implementation.”

The book also includes an appendix providing a comprehensive general drug library to assist in the implementation and ongoing management of smart infusion pumps.
