Indian drug manufacturer Granules India has formed a joint venture with Belgian chemical company Ajinomoto Omnichem to produce active pharmaceutical ingredients and intermediates.

The companies hope to market the products to third-party companies, tapping into the increasing demand for contract manufacturing in the generics market.

The generics market is now estimated to be worth $234bn, and generic drug manufacturers largely outsource their needs for active pharmaceutical ingredients.

Granules-Omnichem, a 50:50 joint venture company, will establish a $20m production facility in Andhra Pradesh, India, with construction expected to start in November and complete late next year.
