A Swiss manufacturer of eye care products, Alcon, has started construction of its first pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Singapore.

The new manufacturing plant at Tuas Biomedical Park, Singapore is expected to be completed by 2012.

The new plant will manufacture sight-saving pharmaceutical products for diseases such as glaucoma, eye infections, eye inflammation and dry eyes.

Alcon senior vice president for global manufacturing and technological operations Ed McGough said that with the rapid growth experienced in Asia, this new Singapore plant would be integral to meeting increasing demand.

“The strategically positioned Singapore location, coupled with the increased capacity of this plant, will help us supply Asia with essential eye care pharmaceuticals more efficiently,” he said.
