The US should spend more on ensuring the safety of vaccines and establish a permanent working group to advise the government on these issues, according to a report by the Institute of Medicine (IOM).
The IOM said the US lacks immunisation protection against several serious illnesses and a national communications strategy should be developed to clarify the importance of vaccines and bolster public confidence in the immunisation system.

The IOM is one of the National Academies of Science and said the updated plan should have a greater proportion of vaccine research with goals that include producing a single vaccine that would work against all influenza viruses.
