Research into finding new cures for diabetes has grown remarkably in the US over the last few years, with almost 200 new medicines currently in the development pipeline, according to a new report.
The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America report highlights Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) survey, which showed more than a 90% increase in diabetes cases among adults over the last ten years.
According to the CDC study, the increase in fatality rate has also increased by 45% in the past two decades.
In response, America’s pharmaceutical research and biotechnology companies are currently working on 183 new medicines, including 133 for people with type 2 diabetes, and 26 new medicines for patients with type 1 diabetes.
Another 34 medications are also in the pipeline to treat other forms of the disease, such as gestational diabetes as well as other serious conditions related to diabetes.
All these medicines are currently in different stages of research, either undergoing clinical trials or awaiting approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
