The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved nine presentations of heparin sodium injection USP as a vital anticoagulant in surgical and dialysis settings.

The injection is a sterile solution of heparin sodium derived from porcine intestinal mucosa, and is used to prevent blood clots from forming and stop existing clots from getting bigger.

The packaging and labelling features for heparin vials, provided by US-based Sagent Pharmaceuticals, use of a unique colour for each strength.
