Notably, the number of environmental sustainability-related patent applications in the pharmaceutical industry was 2,856 in Q2 2024, versus 6,946 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 3% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Roche filed the most environmental sustainability patents within the pharmaceutical industry in Q2 2024. The company filed 29 environmental sustainability-related patents in the quarter, compared with 24 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Chinese Academy of Sciences with 17 environmental sustainability patent filings, Johnson & Johnson (16 filings), and Contemporary Amperex Technology (16 filings) in Q2 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 23% share of total patent filings
The largest share of environmental sustainability related patent filings in the pharmaceutical industry in Q2 2024 was in China with 23%, followed by the US (20%) and Japan (9%). The share represented by China was 31% lower than the 54% share it accounted for in Q1 2024.
