Vingroup Innovation Foundation (VINIF) is set to fund coronavirus research projects by The Company for Vaccine and Biological Production No 1 (Vabiotech), Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City and Institute of Preventive Medicine and Public Health.

Of the total VND20bn ($857,000), Vabiotech will receive VND8bn ($343,000) to develop vaccines for the coronavirus. The project will involve growing Baculoviruses medium at laboratory scale.

The company is expected to generate 1,000 doses of coronavirus vaccine.

VINIF is providing Institute of Preventive Medicine and Public Health with VND4bn ($171,000) to devise an early warning system for the Covid-19 outbreak. The statistical model will be designed to review infection risk and develop an emergency response plan.

The remaining grant of approximately VND7.5bn ($321,000) will be given to Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City for supporting research on epidemiological characteristics of the new coronavirus in Vietnam.

VINIF managing director Phan Thi Ha Duong said: “Aiming to promote scientific and technological research in Vietnam, in the context of complicated and endemic disease situation, we look forward to empowering scientists in research on disease prevention and control which will be very effective with the cooperation of the State.

“Despite being urgent, the selected projects have been reviewed strictly by the National Council or the Science Council of the Foundation.”
