OPTIMA Life Science at CompaMed: Flexible Production Processes for Pharmaceutical and Medical Products

Medicon machines by Optima Life Science lead the way in terms of modularity. At CompaMed 2013 the company will be showing a Converting System for advanced wound care products, with a production system for ELISA-Test Kits also shown. Both products offer true ‘Plug and Play’ technology.

The OPAL-Software, which will also be presented, gives an overview of production efficiency.

The Converting System Medicon MDC 300 Vario is suitable for the production and development of Advanced Wound Care. The converting process can be modified and extended very easily. The operator can configure modules in production using Plug & Play technology – no prior knowledge of programming is required.

A new production process can be implemented in the shortest possible time, even within a clean room. Thus, the converting lines are ideally suited for new product development as well as for flexible batch production. The biggest advantage is the time to market for new wound dressings, which is greatly reduced.

All process stations necessary for the converting and packaging of a variety of wound dressing types are available from Optima Life Science; for example, unwinding, rewinding, laminating, cutting, placing, sealing, inspection plus many more. Complex dressings such as products with multi-layer wound pads can also be produced on this machine.

With the Medicon ImmuCoat®-System Optima Life Science demonstrates furthermore a modular, scalable system for the automatic coating of Microplates for the production of ELISA Test Kits. The machine is available in two variants, with either six or twelve process stations. A special benefit of the ImmuCoat system is that all basic modules can be arbitrarily combined.

A ‘Plug and Play’ approach allows the easy integration of any individual module. Firstly, this permits an unlimited upgrade of the machine’s capacities; secondly, it allows the modification and adjustment of its functional scope with very little effort. The line simply grows and changes according to requirement. All stations necessary for the coating process are available: stacking modules for infeed and discharge, coding, code identification, ionisation, filling and suction stations, as well as sensor units.

In addition to the base modules, the system can also be equipped with special modules. Amongst these are drying modules as well as modules for short-term and long-term incubation. This allows parallel administration and efficient processing of an almost limitless number of product batches.

The OPAL software solution, developed by Optima and presented at CompaMed serves to evaluate the performance of installed machines, as well as any possible errors, and to identify potential for improvement. In addition, the OEE and alarms are evaluated and comprehensive as well as batch related reports are generated.

At the same time OPAL enables the documenting of production data and occurrences such as operator intervention, malfunctions, material changes and repairs. Orders can be planned chronologically and be assigned to the associated machines. OPAL can communicate with other typically used data processing systems, for example ERP software such as SAP.
