Unseen genes: boosting African DNA in medical research

Despite Africans and people of African ancestry being more genetically diverse than other demographics, only 2% of genetic material used for medical research comes from the African continent. Not only does this run the risk of personalised medicine being ineffective in people of African descent, but, also, a lack of genetic diversity in the databases could mean revolutionary drug targets are missed. 54gene aims to rectify this situation by creating the world’s first African biobank.
