Novartis division Sandoz has launched its second Healthcare Access Challenge (HACk) aimed at supporting digital solutions intended to boost access to healthcare.

Digital technology entrepreneurs and innovators can participate in the global competition.

Sandoz noted that digital innovation has the potential to offer cost-effective and practical solutions to address the current unmet need for universal access to healthcare.

Sandoz CEO and division head Richard Francis said: “There are still two billion people in this world not getting the medicines they need.

“This is why we are launching Sandoz HACk as we aim to inspire and embrace the brave and innovative thinking of entrepreneurs and visionaries to improve access to healthcare around the world.”

The second Sandoz healthcare access challenge will be open for application from 4 October to 30 November this year.

“Building on the inaugural Sandoz HACk, this year we are broadening the competition to anyone, anywhere, with an idea that uses digital technology to help address a local healthcare access challenge.”

Three shortlisted entrants will be announced in January next year and receive support from Sandoz to develop their ideas. The company will later select and provide seed funding to one winner.

During the company’s inaugural HACk competition last year, a panel of judges at the Wired Health 2017 event in London chose three winners out of a total of around 150 applicants from 30 countries.

This initial healthcare access challenge focused on leveraging m-health.

All the three selected ideas – Blood Drive, GoPharma and Save-a-life, involved using mobile technologies to connect patients with caregivers and essential medicines.

Francis noted: “Building on the inaugural Sandoz HACk, this year we are broadening the competition to anyone, anywhere, with an idea that uses digital technology to help address a local healthcare access challenge.

“By collaborating, we hope to create ambitious-yet-practical digital solutions that, with scale, could have a significant impact on people’s lives.”
