UK-based private artificial intelligence (AI) company BenevolentAI, in collaboration with the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC), has created a new award to help charities support their medical research and develop new potential treatments and therapies using AI.

The prize, known as the BenevolentAI Award, will be given to a single applicant once every year.

The winner of the award will have access to the company’s latest technology platform, through which the selected charity will be able to resolve specific research-based challenges.

The company’s platform can be used for conducting deep investigation in a specific disease, developing a better understanding of the disease, identifying new areas and approaches in research and development (R&D) and boosting research towards new treatments and cures.

The award judging panel will comprise BenevolentAI bioscience subsidiary BenevolentBio CEO Jackie Hunter and AMRC CEO Aisling Burnand.

“Most scientific breakthroughs are made by analysing data, but we live in a world where vast quantities of data make the discovery of new drugs and treatments for disease very difficult.”

Hunter said: “Most scientific breakthroughs are made by analysing data, but we live in a world where vast quantities of data make the discovery of new drugs and treatments for disease very difficult.

“We use AI to solve this issue and want to offer medical research charities the chance to benefit from the successes we have had a company in developing, validating and commercialising this technology.”

The applications for the BenevolentAI Award need to be submitted by 31 January next year and can be filed by all AMRC member medical charities, big and small, and in any disease area.

The applications should focus on addressing a specific problem and/or advancing a specific initiative.

The judging panel will access applications and choose the winning charity to be announced on 20 March 2018.
