Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ordered the release of two owners of pharmaceutical companies as part of an investigation into deaths caused by the reaction from drugs distributed by the Punjab Institute of Cardiology.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has also been told to submit an investigative report into the case, following the FIA informing the court that one pharmaceutical company had been manufacturing the drugs without a license.

The order was issued from a three-judge bench headed by Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, who questioned the arrest of the owner of Alpha Pharmaceuticals when no post-mortem reports or findings from the investigation had been presented.

Evidence filed to the court has revealed that most deaths attributed to the drugs were caused by heart attacks, and the suspected drugs have been sent to Belgium, Switzerland and the UK for further testing.

Following the release of two owners on bail, the case has been adjourned until 6 February 2011.
