
In 2016, Novartis was the top industry sponsor for clinical trials. GlaxoSmithKline and Johnson & Johnson were at the second and the third place, respectively. Pfizer, Eli Lily, Boehringer Ingelheim, Roche, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Abbive and Merck made up the remaining companies in the top 10 leaders in 2016. The ranking is based on clinical trials directly sponsored by these companies.
Table 1 summarizes the ranking on leading industry sponsors for clinical trials in 2016, 2015 and 2014. The highlighted sponsors were among the top 10 leading sponsors in all three years. AstraZeneca has fallen out of top 10 sponsors in 2016, while Boehringer Ingelheim, Bristol Myers Squibb and Merck re-entered the top 10 list 2016 after falling out of it in 2015. Abbvie is the new entrant for the top 10 sponsors in 2016, which did not make to the top 10 in previous two years.
