What is Environmental?

The Environmental category aims to highlight companies that are undertaking projects that reduce their impact on the natural environment or contribute to its general health. With the effects of climate change becoming ever more obvious, corporations have a responsibility to update and change their practices to prevent further damage being caused.

This category includes any projects that have led or will lead to a significant reduction in a company’s environmental impact and carbon footprint. This can include changes to materials and manufacturing, supply chain reviews; reduction in energy use or switches to renewables; recycling initiatives; and carbon offsetting. The category also includes projects that contribute to the environment such as tree planting schemes and river cleaning.

When it comes to environmental impact pharmaceutical companies have similar challenges to other industries when it comes to manufacture and distribution of their products. Reducing carbon emissions from such processes is obviously a key concern and progress is being seen in this respect, whether it be the setting of carbon reduction targets, improved efficiency in manufacturing, or research into alternative materials for product packaging.

In addition to this though the industry has its own unique challenges and priorities when it comes to reducing environmental impact, the most prominent being pharmaceutical waste pollution from used or discarded products. The chemicals and materials used in the production of drugs can often find their way into the water supply with potentially serious ramifications, but we are seeing a concerted effort from manufacturers and institutions to find new ways of tackling this through interception or treatment.

Categories

The companies in this category have made a concerted effort to reduce their environmental impact, whether it be through carbon targets, changes to the manufacturing process or strategies to reduce pharmaceutical pollution.
