A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11987829B2) discloses a recombinant microorganism designed to produce specific enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of flavonoids. The microorganism contains heterologous nucleic acid sequences for flavanone 7-O-beta-D-glucosyltransferase, 6"-O-rhamnosyltransferase, and UDP-glucose 4,6-dehydratase/UDP-4-keto-6-deoxy-D-glucose 3,5-epimerase/UDP-4-keto-L-rhamnose-reductase, enabling the addition of glucose and rhamnose to hesperetin and diosmetin. Additionally, the microorganism includes sequences for tyrosine ammonia lyase, 4-coumarin-CoA ligase, naringenin-chalcone synthase, chalcone isomerase, flavonoid 3'-monooxygenase, O-methyltransferase, phenylalanine ammonia lyase, cinnamate 4-hydroxylase, flavone synthase, cytochrome P450 reductase, and S-adenosylmethionine synthetase, enhancing the production of various flavonoids.

Furthermore, the patent specifies that the microorganism can be a yeast or a bacterium, providing flexibility in the choice of host organism for the biosynthesis of flavonoids. The inclusion of specific enzyme sequences with at least 60% sequence identity ensures the efficient production of flavonoids with desired modifications. This innovation in genetic engineering of microorganisms opens up possibilities for the sustainable and cost-effective production of flavonoids with potential applications in pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and other industries requiring these valuable compounds.
