This investment adds to more than $7bn spent by the company on pharmaceutical research, development, and manufacturing in the US over the past five years.
The planned site will operate as a modular facility merging drug substance and drug product manufacturing, incorporating automated and digital systems.
It will support treatments across cardiovascular, oncology, and renal care. Production will roll out in stages, with the initial drug substance module scheduled to open in 2031, followed by a drug product manufacturing unit in 2034.
Construction of the site is expected to generate nearly 1,500 jobs, whilst ongoing operations are projected to create approximately 600 roles.
Bayer also intends to integrate the facility into a US-based collaboration network linking commercial manufacturing with academic research.
Bayer CEO Bill Anderson said: “Bayer has long seen the US as a key manufacturing base and innovation hub. This landmark investment underscores our commitment.
“The new site will be home to manufacturing expertise and a skilled workforce that will strengthen our ability to deliver innovative, high-quality medicines to patients both in the US and abroad.”
The Ohio project will complement Bayer’s US pharmaceutical headquarters in Whippany, New Jersey, as well as facilities in Berkeley, California; Cambridge, Massachusetts; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Research Triangle Park, North Carolina; and San Diego, California.
In fiscal 2025, Bayer employed nearly 88,000 staff worldwide, reporting total sales of €45.6bn ($51.3bn) and research and development expenditure of €5.8bn.
In June 2026, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) validated Bayer’s marketing authorisation application for asundexian, an oral Factor XIa inhibitor, to prevent ischaemic stroke.
