GBI Research’s recent publication examines how Big Data technologies can be used to transform commercial strategy and provide competitive advantage. GBI conducted an extensive survey of 73 experts from the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries – including both organizations that already utilize Big Data and those that do not. This survey gathered experiences and opinions on the use of Big Data, and insights on key trends for the present and future use of the technology within healthcare.

Companies that already use Big Data, and companies that do not, are in agreement

For example, in one question, survey respondents were asked to rank the areas where they felt Big Data could have the most impact within the next five years. The results demonstrated a remarkable level of agreement between those that already use Big Data and those that do not, suggesting that the trend seen is not heavily biased by the organization’s current status with regards to the technology.
The main difference between the two panels is that those that currently use Big Data believe more strongly that it can have a big impact on sales, marketing and commercial activities over the next five years.

Areas where Big Data use is currently least prevalent, will rise to the top in future

These results present an interesting dichotomy between the areas in which organizations currently implement Big Data, and where they believe it will have the most impact over the next five years. Manufacturing and regulatory affairs are currently the areas in which Big Data use is least prevalent, but they are also the areas in which organizations believe Big Data can have the most impact.
