Coronavirus company news summary – ADB approves $250m loan to increase Covid-19 vaccine supplies in Philippines – Novavax seeks emergency use approval for Covid-19 vaccine in the UAE

By Darcy Jimenez

The Asian Development Bank has allocated a $250m loan to improve Covid-19 vaccine supplies in the Philippines. The loan amount will be used by the Philippine government to buy 40 million additional doses of Covid-19 vaccines for eligible children and booster shots for adults. The support comes as the Southeast Asian country aims to fully vaccinate nearly half of its population before the end of this year.

Novavax has submitted a regulatory filing in the UAE seeking emergency use of its recombinant nanoparticle protein-based Covid-19 vaccine NVX-CoV2373. The filing, which includes data from two pivotal Phase III clinical trials, seeks regulatory evaluation from the UAE’s Ministry of Health and Prevention. The vaccine has already received Emergency Use Authorisation in Indonesia and the Philippines with approval awaited in several other countries.

The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and Affinivax have entered into a partnership to advance with the development of a novel Covid-19 vaccine that could offer protection against SARS-CoV-2 variants as well as other beta-coronaviruses. Under the deal, CEPI will offer up to $4.5m in funding to support the initial development, including vaccine candidate selection, manufacturing process development and preclinical testing. The vaccine will be based on Affinivax’s innovative Multiple Antigen Presenting System technology platform.
