ILC Dover Introduces Atmospheric Control Module to Safely Contain Highly-Potent Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients

ILC Dover, a world leader in the innovative design and production of engineered products employing high-performance flexible materials, introduced the Atmospheric Control Module (ACM) designed to provide additional risk mitigation and enhanced processing control for highly-potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (HPAPIs) within laboratory areas and GMP operations.

The ACM is designed for use with ILC Dover’s ArmorFlex® Flexible Isolator. Its precise fan speed and pressure gas regulation facilitates negative pressure operation within flexible-wall isolators. The module works with air or nitrogen, and features a portable and compact design, fully automated vacuum control and breach response, and superior ergonomics for operators.

“Over the past few decades, the pharmaceutical industry has been challenged with the introduction of hormones, steroids, and other cytotoxic materials that are all potentially hazardous to operators and the environment,” said Dave Howes, Product & New Business Development Manager at ILC Dover.

“The main concern is how we can safely process these highly potent materials as they become more common in production facilities, and we are excited to introduce the Atmospheric Control Module, a component of our ArmorFlex® Flexible Isolator system, to the market.”

The ACM’s fully automated provision of negative air pressure provides additional risk mitigation when operating flexible-wall isolators, further reducing the risk of operator exposure. It can be operated to maintain positive air pressure within the flexible isolator for applications requiring sterility, as well as facilitate relative-humidity control. The module is available in single-fan and dual-fan configurations. The single-fan system satisfies most applications.

ILC Dover’s ArmorFlex® Flexible Isolator, coupled with the ACM, can be used for a wide range of applications including weighing or dividing up chemicals, chemical and drug substance synthesis, oral solid dosage production, sampling activities, and packaging operations. It provides superior risk mitigation and enhanced containment performance with no loss of ergonomic benefits when correctly designed and operated. This advanced form of isolation technology prevents any exposure to the operators in the event of a flaw or breach in the containment barrier.

While design characteristics may be identical to rigid stainless-steel isolators, flexible film aseptic isolators offer several advantages for careful consideration.
