The value marked a decrease of 75.2% over the previous month and a drop of 68.4% when compared with the last 12-month average, which stood at $23.56bn.

Comparing deals value in different regions of the globe, North America held the top position, with total announced deals in the period worth $3.53bn. At the country level, the US topped the list in terms of deal value at $3.51bn.

In terms of volumes, North America emerged as the top region for pharma industry M&A deals globally, followed by Europe and then Middle East and Africa.

The top country in terms of M&A deals activity in March 2019 was the US with 15 deals, followed by France with three and the UK with two.

In 2019, as of the end of March 2019, pharma M&A deals worth $136.23bn were announced globally, marking an increase of 134.3% year on year.

The top five pharma industry M&A deals accounted for 83.6% of the overall value during March 2019.

The combined value of the top five pharma industry M&A deals stood at $6.22bn, against the overall value of $7.44bn recorded for the month. The top announced pharma industry M&A deal tracked by GlobalData in March 2019 was Grifols‘ $1.93bn acquisition of Shanghai RAAS Blood Products.

In second place was the $1.7bn acquisition of Brammer Bio by Thermo Fisher Scientific and in third place was Fujifilm’s $890m acquisition of Biogen Denmark Manufacturing.

The $877m acquisition of Nightstar Therapeutics by Biogen and RP Management’s asset transaction with Ligand Pharmaceuticals for $827m held fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
