The basic function of vitamin D is to control bone metabolism as well as calcium and phosphorus homeostasis, which is closely related to the mineralization of the bone system. However, in recent years, considerable research has been carried out, both in vitro and in vivo, which has helped to detect non calcemic actions of vitamin D metabolites and confirm the so-called pleiotropic, i.e., multidirectional action of vitamin D.

SARS-CoV-2, responsible for the COVID-19 pandemics, has brought about an explosion of interest both in the mechanisms of infection, as well as in potential risk factors of the disease. Vitamin D has become a factor that may be involved in both these areas.
