OrbiMed raises $3bn to back global life science players

The duo of funds will support companies across the life sciences landscape – including those in the biopharma, healthcare technology and medtech disciplines.

Global healthcare investment giant OrbiMed has raised $3bn for two new private equity funds to support the growth of companies across the European, US and Asian life sciences sectors.

This raise has seen OrbiMed establish two new funds. The first, dubbed OrbiMed Private Investments X, has raised over $1.9bn to siphon cash into both US and European life sciences venture capital opportunities.

Meanwhile, the second private equity fund, OrbiMed Asia Partners VI, has raised over $1bn, which will support Asian companies by investing in venture capital and healthcare growth opportunities across the continent.

Coming three years after the launch of their previous iterations, the latest tranches will support companies across a broad spectrum of disciplines within the life sciences sector, though the primary investment focus will lie in the realm of biopharmaceuticals, as well as technology-enabled healthcare services, medical devices and diagnostics.

The investors behind these new funds, OrbiMed says, come from broad sources, with medical institutions, pension funds, family offices, sovereign wealth funds and university endowments all contributing a portion of the capital to this raise.

According to OrbiMed's managing partner, Carl Gordon, there has never been a more exciting time to be investing in life sciences. “AI, a proliferation of new therapeutic modalities and China’s emergence as a biotechnology powerhouse are expanding the opportunities to develop transformative treatments,” Gordon commented.

“We look forward to helping entrepreneurs turn these advances into leading healthcare companies.”

OrbiMed’s most recent raise follows a similar tack to fellow healthcare investor ARCH Venture Partners, which detailed plans for a $3bn raise to support early-stage biotech in August 2026.

Meanwhile, Europe’s largest life sciences-dedicated venture capital firm, Forbion, also raised €2.3bn ($2.6bn) across two funds earlier this month, which will support around 30 “high-potential” biotech companies.

However, a recent report from GlobalData, the parent company of Pharmaceutical Technology, revealed that the value and volume of global venture capital investments both dropped quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) in Q3 2026 compared with Q2. The Asia Pacific Region (APAC), driven by China, bucked the trend, with the value of deals across the region growing by 20.7% QoQ.
