Meissner Filtration Products is developing a new manufacturing facility in County Mayo, Castlebar, Ireland.

The new facility will be the company’s first manufacturing plant in Europe. It will help the company to enhance its clients’ pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical production.

The project was announced in February 2019 and is expected to be operational by Q1 2020. It is expected to create more than 150 direct jobs over five years and support the local economy.

The project is supported by the Irish Government through Project Ireland 2040, which aims to support economic and social development of various regions in the country through an investment of €116bn ($133.13bn) over a period of ten years.

Location of Meissner Filtration Products’ manufacturing facility

Meissner Filtration Products’ manufacturing facility will be located in the Castlebar Business & Technology Park in Drumconlan, County Mayo. Spanning 24 acres, the park has the necessary facilities and services infrastructure to meet the requirements of manufacturing clients worldwide.

Ireland was chosen due to the proximity to the company’s customer base and the availability of skilled labour. The location will also enable Meissner to expand its footprint geographically in Europe.

Details of the single-use systems manufacturing plant

Meissner purchased a newly constructed 34,000ft² two-storey facility named Advanced Technology Building for the project that was developed by IDA Ireland. The building is a highly specified facility featuring offices and manufacturing space.

“Spanning 24 acres, the park has the necessary facilities and services infrastructure to meet the requirements of manufacturing clients worldwide.”

The building will be expanded to cover 100,000ft² and feature a state-of-the-art cleanroom to manufacture single-use systems.

The existing office space accommodates approximately 100 people. It will be expanded to accommodate more than 200 people by introducing a mezzanine floor.

The company has also purchased land adjacent to the building, which will enable the footprint of the facility to be expanded by three folds in future.

Meissner’s single-use systems

Meissner’s single-use systems are utilised to provide optimised fluid handling to the biopharmaceutical clients. The systems are marketed under the One-Touch® brand and include the TepoFlex® biocontainers, FlexStation® rigid outer containers, BioFlex® fluid path assemblies and FluoroFlex® polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) based biocontainers.

The TepoFlex biocontainers are made of TepoFlex polyethylene (PE) film and minimise the risk of culture media, buffers and other drug products degradation, as well as the risk of fluid integrity loss. The TepoFlex film is very clear with low extractables profile and helps in reducing product interference.

The reusable and cost-effective FlexStation rigid outer containers provide complete fluid management to meet shipping and storage needs. BioFlex fluid path assemblies enable safe fluid transfer for single-use systems. FluoroFlex PVDF-based biocontainers are stable towards heat and chemicals and are used in applications where PE-based biocontainers cannot be used.

Other single-use systems in Meissner’s product portfolio include QuaDrum®, FlexCessory products, FlexFill biocontainer and the FlexFill mixing assembly.
