
Of the ten largest industry and academic sponsors of 2012–2016 clinical trials with locations in Israel, six were pharmaceutical companies and four were government and academic institutions. Among industry sponsored trials in Israel, Novartis held the first place, followed by Merck and Bayer. These were followed by Roche, AstraZeneca, Abbvie, Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk, Pfizer, and Bristol-Myers Squibb, as shown in Figure 1.

In terms of the ten largest non-industry clinical trial sponsors in Israel, the top three places were taken by the Sheba Medical Center, Rabin Medical Center, and Hadassah Medical Center, in order, followed by the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, Rambam Healthcare Campus, Meir Medical Center, Hillel Yaffe Medical Center, Shaare Zedek Medical Center, Haemek Medical Center, and Wolfson Medical Center, as shown in Figure 2.

GlobalData examined the number of trials that were run by sponsors alone compared to those run by sponsors that engaged a CRO. Out of all trials that started in Israel between 2012 and 2016, 19.3% involved a CRO. It is possible the CRO involvement is an underestimation, because identifying trials with CRO involvement is subject to the availability of that information in the public domain.
Out of the top 10 CROs engaged in Israel, the leader was Quintiles with 35 trials. Pharmaceutical Product Development was second, followed by Parexel, Sarah Cannon Research Institute, INC Research, PRA Health Sciences, Medpace, Covance, Pharmaceutical Research Associates, and ICON, as shown in Figure 3.
