
Of the ten largest industry and academic sponsors for stem cell therapy clinical trials in the ten-year period between 2007 and 2016, nine were pharmaceutical companies and one was a government and academic institution.
Among industry sponsored trials in stem cell therapy, Mesoblast held first place, followed by Anterogen, Celgene, and Stempeutics Research.
These were followed by MediPost, US Stem Cell, Pluristem Therapeutics, Microbot Medical, TiGenix, and Neuralstem, as shown in Figure 11. Mesoblast had 30 trials in the period of 2007-2016, which was almost three times more than the top non-industry sponsor.
In terms of the largest non-industry clinical trial sponsors in stem cell therapy, the top three places were taken by Nanfang Hospital, Samsung Medical Center, and University of California and Los Angeles. They were followed by the University of Miami, the University of Texas, University of Kebangsaan Malaysia, Great Ormond Steet Hospital, and the City of Hope, with an equivalent number of trials, as shown in Figure 2.
