Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) has further established itself on the growing list of big pharma partners who are forging tight collaborations with big tech, as it deepens its collaborations with NVIDIA to deploy an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled supercomputer that it claims is the “most powerful single-owned Nvidia infrastructure in life sciences.”
By deploying the tech giant’s latest supercomputer purpose-built for agentic AI, the NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD, BMS hopes to further scale its use of proprietary AI models within its workflow, while shortening drug discovery timelines across five core disease areas by automating target identification and validation. The new supercomputer, which is built on eight of DGX Vera Rubin NVL72 systems, joins the first NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD BMS deployed for use in R&D about three years ago, according to a blog post from the chipmaker.
The supercomputer will also help BMS carry out its ‘predict first’ approach, in which the company uses AI-generated forecasts to inform experimental design for all of its small molecule and a significant portion of the large molecule programmes.
BMS also claims that this uptick in computing power will offer a more energy-efficient solution compared with its predecessor due to the supercomputer’s ability to deliver up to ten times” better performance per megawatt – meaning BMS can enhance its AI capabilities without a proportional increase in energy consumption and requirements.
According to BMS’ chief digital and technology officer, Grey Meyers, the company has made a “deliberate bet” on AI, which is now beginning to pay dividends within its pipeline and operations.
“We're committed to translating AI into real outcomes for patients, which requires infrastructure built to match that ambition. Expanding our compute capabilities with Nvidia gives our researchers and teams across the business the scale they need to keep BMS at the leading edge of what AI can do for drug discovery and development.”
The deployment of another Nvidia supercomputer further builds on BMS’ AI infrastructure, which saw an uptick when the company announced it would roll out Anthropic’s Claude to over 30,000 employees back in May 2026.
Big pharma all in on AI
Alongside BMS, almost every big pharma company has made the leap in incorporating AI into their workflow – with many choosing Nvidia as their partner of choice for hardware.
This includes Eli Lilly, which previously claimed it was building pharma’s ‘most powerful’ supercomputer with Nvidia back in October 2025, and Roche, which launched its Nvidia AI factory back in March 2026.
This comes as the lines between big technology and pharma become increasingly blurred, as companies rush to adopt AI into their workflows as competitiveness on the global stage swells.
The software side of the AI craze includes companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, which are also making a foray into the healthcare space with their own respective offerings for drug discovery and development. Recently, Anthropic announced it would be progressing a drug pipeline of its own focused on “neglected” diseases.
