Sheffield Bio-Science has won the 2010 Frost & Sullivan Global new product innovation award in the pharmaceutical excipients market. The company’s LubriTose product was singled out by the world-renowned consulting and research firm for improving the speed, quality and cost of tablet manufacturing.

LubriTose is an integrated co-processed excipient system developed to improve direct-compression and high-speed tabletting operations.

Available in both AN (anhydrous) and SD (spray dried) versions, LubriTose provides a unique benefit to formulators because the directly compressible lactose is now self-lubricating. With Lubritose, there is no longer any need to precisely monitor lubricant addition and mixing times or stop and start powder blending operations.

The innovative new product completely eliminates the need for the secondary addition of a tablet lubricant, along with the inherent process problems associated with lubricant addition, such as inadequate or over-blending, dusting, equipment residue and tablet press slowdowns.

“With LubriTose, our customers are seeing opportunities to improve their tablet manufacturing operations and end-product,” said Jim Egan, director of communications at Sheffield Bio-Science. “This recognition by Frost & Sullivan reaffirms our focus on understanding customer needs and developing innovative products that not only solve their formulation problems, but also contribute to their bottom lines by improving tablet manufacturing efficiencies.”

The Frost & Sullivan award for new product innovation is presented annually to the company that surpasses the competition based on the following criteria: innovative element of the product; leverage of leading edge technologies; value-added features/ benefits; increased customer value; and customer acquisition/penetration potential. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis and extensive secondary research to identify best practices in the industry.
