Laser diodes provide the illumination source used to detect particles in the air sample. The calibration is based on the intensity of the light emitted by the laser diode.

There are a number of factors which affect the overall laser diode life. While a catastrophic failure is one of the more obvious laser diode failure modes, it is also found that laser diodes degrade over time.
